Subject: Growing Dar's (fwd)

Hi everyone,

Seems my idea has already been thunk of before :-)! Below is an
informative, detailed message on a circulating water/growing system
for Darlingtonia.

Chris

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Hi Chris,

Here is my method for growing Darlingtonia's.
Parts reqd:

1 utility pail (home depot $3.98)
1 black plastic pot (home depot $2.98)
1 pump (h.d. $49.00)
9 ft. plastic tubing
Brass tees and fittings
Expanded clay pellets
Sphagnum moss
Timer

Place the pump with tubing in utility pail. Put spacers (3) in
pail to position pot about 6" to 8" above bottom of pail. Put pot
on top of spacers. I use a mix of expanded clay and sphagnum moss
to keep the medium light. You can use a smaller pump($30) but with
mine I split the output into 3 tubes. This increases coverage and
reduces
pressure. Drill 3 holes a little smaller than the tube diameter
equidistant
just below the rim of the pot. This grips the tubing securely. Fill
reservoir
to the bottom of the pot. My timer (Noma) has 6 on/off cycles per day
so I set it for 6:00,9:00,12:00, 3:00, 6:00, 9:00 everyday for 5 min
per cycle.
This setup gives the plant plenty of moisture without water logging it.
It also requires minimal upkeep so you can go on holidays etc... without

worry(power failures notwithstanding) You do need to top up the water
occasionally due to evaporation.
I just started reading the list again and haven't had time to
contribute, feel
free to post this info to all if you feel it is worth it. Hope to make
the meeting
in May. See you there.

Take care

Mike
