He even had to learn the newly developed mathematics of his time (vectors!
by Levi and Ricci-Curbastro) - of which he didn't even know it existed,
unless someone (his former pupil and friend Marcel Grossmann) pointed it out
to him - to solve the final problems in his General Theory of Relativity.
