Hi Everyone
My name is Vic Brown and I have recently joined the list after spending many
happy hours gleaning useful cultivation tips and other gems of wisdom from
the archives. I am an entomologist by profession, having spent most of my
career studying various aspects of the ecology of herbivorous insects. For
the last six years my career has been on hold whilst I have been at home
looking after my to children. I have being growing CPs for about 17 years.
In 1995 I moved to Belgium for four years which resulted in a greatly
reduced CP collection. However, in Summer 1999 I returned to live in the
Cambridgeshire, England, purchased a house with a conservatory and garden
and resumed my love affair with CPs.
Shortly after arriving back I purchased Peter D'Amato's wonderful book, The
Savage Garden and I haven't looked back. My tropical fish tank now houses 3
Neps and a H x midoxa (never seemed to have much luck with fish anyway). My
outdoor peatbog is thriving with a few hardy Sarracenia and Drosera and a
couple of Darlingtonia (which are putting up babies on runners all over the
place). The conservatory houses mainly Drosera and Utrics and there is
barely a Ping-free window sill in the house! This Summer I joined the
Carnivorous Plant Society here in the U.K. (a great way to meet fellow
enthusiasts and exchange/purchase new plants) and I am in the process of
joining the IPSG.
I imagine my contributions to this list will be mainly in the form of
questions as my collection expands beyond my expertise. On that note I will
finish this introduction with one.
My pygmy Drosera are starting to form gemmae and I will plant some of them
immediately. I wish to keep some of them as a safe-guard, what is the best
way of achieving this? (refrigeration?) and how long can gemmae remain
viable under optimal storage conditions?
Cheers
Vic Brown
