Re: in vitro culture

Hi! I have just logged on for the first time in almost 2 weeks (I kept
getting busy signals!), and I'm not caught up yet, so I have probably
missed some of the discussion about this. I do have some info that I'd
like to pass along; hope it's not out of date.

1) I called Carolina Biological Supply, and asked them for a catalog.
We shall see.

2) I tried calling Difco, but they said that they only have little
bits of cell culture stuff, and it's not for plants. Suggested that I
probably wanted Dibco / BRL Life Sciences, and were kind enough to
give me the number (800 828 6686 -- I don't know whether that works
outside of the US). I called and asked them for a catalog.

3) Today I got to go on a rather amazing tour that does not quite
relate to CP so I won't tell you ALL about it, but one of the places
we visited is apparently one of the ten biggest micropropagators on
this continent - they do 7 or 8 million plants a year (!). They told
me that they get their stuff from Sigma, and gave me the numbers (800
325 3010 phone, and 800 325 5052 FAX) -- if you call, ask for the
Plant Cell Culture catalog.

4) We also visited an orchid micropropagator, and they were kind
enough to give me one jar of some nominal medium, with which I am
going to attempt to establish a callus culture of a tropical lily I
have that took heavy damage during our recent storm-and-power-outage.
If I'm lucky, there's at least a 1% chance that the cells will maybe
grow on this medium. Then, of course, I have the insidiously difficult
task of attempting to regenerate a plant, and about a 0.01% chance of
succeeding at that, so I ain't holding my breath! Fun to try, though.

That's about where I stand at the moment.

Cheers
