water quality

I've been contemplating buying a reverse osmosis water purifyer, but
learned this morning that my local water (EBMUD) has extremely low
dissolved solids - on the order of 25 to 50 PPM. I've been using tap
water for a couple of years (I let it stand overnight to get rid of the
chlorine) without killing anything, but now that my collection is
expanding , I figured I should investigate this a little more. Do any
of you use RO units? What do these things spec for output water
quality? Anybody else use water out of the tap in the San Francisco Bay
area?
