how do I kill moss?

How do people deal with the infamous "nose-hair" moss which
crops up eventually if you use straight peat as a top dressing
to your soil mix? I've come to the conclusion that this stuff
stifles, and eventually kills, small plants or seedlings, but
short of mowing it with scissors or picking away at it with
tweezers I don't know how to fight it. I'm tired of repotting
my plants every 6 months or so to get rid of this stuff. Is
there any kind of fungicide which will keep the moss from sending
up the sporophytes, or whatever they are called?
