Cut S. leucophylla leaves (and sometimes flowers of this and other species)
are actually fairly common during summertime (I have seen them at the flower
market here in San Francisco, as well as in the "fancier" florists around
the city). . . and, yes, it is my understanding that much of this material
is collected in the wild (often illegally). This was cited as a
contributing factor to the disappearance of this species in the Dec. '92
article in Smithsonian (see below for full citation).
