You shouldn't have problems - make sure the light is hung at least a
foot and a half from the ceiling. You whould use a rectangular hood to
distribute the light most efficiently. The reason that many catalogs
sell ventilation equipment is that for large "operations" (yes, you get
the right idea), there can be a heat problem. Also the smell of illicit
material some of these people are growing is a problem, so they use fans
to dispel it, as well as air filters. I presume this is not an issue in
your case. :)

It will warm a small room quite effectively though.

No, halogen lights are not the same as halide. A halogen lamp is a very
small bulb, whereas a 1000 watt halide is about 12 inches long and about
8 inches wide. It will light about a 10 foot circle of growing area.
