There are those nasty little burrs which look very much like caltrops and
stick into your feet if you walk on them. Is that the kind of thing ? I
remember seeing (and stepping on) them in Queensland. I don't know where you
would get seed from though.

Rupert,
I think you are on the right path. One species has nasty seed capsules
that can flatten tires. The one I'm looking for is not so dangerous,
but has the same attractive yellow flowers.
