David: Does Carolina Biological Supply have some perhaps? I know
Peter Paul's in NY has it, but they are heavily involved in field
collecting what they sell.

I'm sure that there are so many CPers in the bay area that they must
know of someplace to get it. Of course, they may just take occasional
trots into the mountains and get it there.

Don Schnell once told me of how some biologists were collected _Sphagnum_
on National Park land, and were stopped by a ranger. The ranger said,
"You know you're not allowed to collect plants without a permit" and
they answered, "Oh, these aren't plants---it's just moss." This
apparently satisfied the ranger.

If you grow it well, all you need is a small amount and it will reproduce
itself.
