Bulbs do not need to look like onions. what's important is that they
are enclosed in sheaths of foliar origin. The "dried husks of previous
year's ..." are exactly this (of foliar origin). You cannot expect
leaves serving the purpose of enclosing an underground bulb to look like
the above-ground leaves (i.e. green and tentacle-bearing)! Bulbs are
reduced stems with SHORT internodes, tubers are enlarged stems with
ENLARGED internodes and reduced leaves. Kind regards Jan
