I wouldn't want to go into Mexico alone, particularly
if NAFTA fails, but I'd go w/ someone else. Ideally
I'd be forewarned by 6 months or more so I could pick
up some basic spanish.

I agree with Barry in that I suspect the problem between
Americans and Mexicans is less the fault of Mexicans than
the Americans (same goes for Americans in any other country).
While on my trips to Germany in the mid '80's I saw first-
hand just how embarrassing "the ugly American" can be in
foreign lands.
