I've used standard horticultural "Propagating Sand" for years without problems.
The important thing to do, I find, is to wash the sand thoroughly before use.
I just dump some in a bucket as wash it under the tap vigously until the water
clears - this leaves just the larger grains and removes the dust/silt and
hopefully any chemicals. Avoid fishtank sand which tends to be have large
pea-shaped "grains" which isn't much good for anything (except fishtanks...)
