Phil:

You know, to assess the impact of VFTs as an introduced species is a
tricky matter. After habitat destruction, competition by exotic species
is the 2nd leading cause of extinction. But it's hard for me to imagine
VFTs as really crowding other species out of existence---it is not an
invasive or rapidly reproducing species. On the other hand, there are many
instances of exotic, apparently benign species producing unexpected results
out of their natural ranges. I'm sure our esteemed Australian contributors
could tell us about Cane Toads, as Earl on Hawaii can about pigs, and
Arizonan Michael Chamberland can about Johnson grass.

My brother tells me that those cans of wildflower seedmixes available in
stores and catalogues are working overtime on species introduction.

Today I got a note from long-time companion Rob Maharajh, who is familiar
to many of you. He says hello and all is well, although busy. He has been
working on job possibilities, now that he is Dr. Rob.
