There was a TV show on this same subject.
It indicated that many/most of the great
European peat bogs have been decimated
by peat miners. It was also indicated
that intrusion of water into former
peat bogs liberate more greenhouse
gasses than burning fuels for heat (as
I recall). Peat fixes carbon, and when
peat is mined, it's exposed to the
air. Decomposition frees carbon dioxide.
