Barry's comments on priority also apply in biology, at least the
molecular end of it. Priority is determined by the date of a paper's
acceptance for publication. In my field, the cloning of the androgen
receptor was accomplished almost simultaneously by to separate
laboratories. Manuscripts were both sent the journal Nature and both
were accepted for publication in the same issue. The papers were
published back to back although priority was given to the first
manuscript accepted.
