How do you grow D. slackii?

I've had this species for a year or so, and have had
what I'd call poor success with it. My plant is
growing very tall and somewhat pale red, instead
of low and very red. I suspect that my plant is
etoliated, but if that's true then it must take a
LOT of light. I suspect it also requires a decent
amount of heat. Should this plant be grown in the
same conditions as the D. petiolaris complex (i.e.
very hot and very bright)?
Enquiring minds want to know.
