The Gardens of the Sun

I've started to read "The Gardens of the Sun". To my surprise, it is really
quite cheery. I had supposed it would be more like a carnivorous "Heart of
Darkness"! :-)

By the way, does anyone know about the (Victorian?) Wardian cases and the
early horticulture of Nepenthes? How successful were they? And how much
has been lost, or fallen out of cultivation, since that time?
