For me personally, the fascination is with naturally occurring variations.
For orchids too, the fascination is with species. A few folks I know have
experimented with _Sarracenia_ hybrids looking for asthetically pleasing
combinations of pitcher color and shape. A large number of _Nepenthes_
hybrids were created in Europe (late 1800's?), but I think many were lost
as the plants went out of vogue in later years.
