Matt - I am treading in deep water here because I, also, have no first 
hand experience with colchatrine (would someone please check correct sp?) 
but I do own 3n and 3n plants.  The 4N orchids are bigger, stronger, and 
make pronouncedly larger, more robust blooms.  I don't know if this is 
always the case but it is certainly the case with some orchids.  I think 
it's true with trees, also, because I am aware of the work going on right 
not to produce the "super " tree that would almost leap up out of the ground.
I am sure others will be along with a more scientific explanation.
