This is by way of introducing myself. I am a postdoctoral fellow at the
University of Chicago, and I've been doing research on the food web inside
the pitchers of Sarracenia purpurea. I use the pitchers as a model system
for studying the dynamics of microbial communities in aquatic systems.
Paul Temple was interested in finding cp folks from Illinois - so here I
am. Actually, there are a few others in and around the Chicago area that I
know of. I've informed them of the cp discussion group.
Paul - I'm particularly interested in the Heliamphoras found on the
Argentinian tepuis. Have you had any experience with these? I understand
some species do appear to have symbiotic mosquitoes much like the Wyeomyia
smithii found in S. purpurea.
In line with the above - does anyone know if the S. purpurea "transplants"
in Ireland and other European locales have symbionts (especially mosquitoes
or midges)?
