Re Dr Kondos Book - some very nice photos and worth it for
these alone accepting that some are now believed to be
incorrectly named. On P139 the plant in the photo is not of
Pinguicula colimensis - to me it looks like
P.hemiepiphytica. There are a few problems with the Utrics:
a. U.capensis on P157 is correctly called U.bisquamata.
b. P161 shows a super plant named as U.hookeri - The species
called U.hookeri is now accepted under the name U.inaequalis
- however the plant in the photo is not U.inaequalis either
- it is in fact U.benthamii! If you would like to know what
U.inaequalis looks like, simply turn to P182 where you will
find 3 photos supposed to be of U.volubilis. The bottom
left photo is of U.inaequalis - the other two do correctly
show U.volubilis.
Confused? I certainly was! I was looking out for
seeds/plants of U.hookeri for years before discovering that
the correct name is U.inaequalis. Having germinated seeds of
U.inaequalis I subsequently found out that due to the errors
in Kondos book I realy wanted to grow U.benthamii. I had to
start all over again AAARRRGHHH!!!!!!!! The consolation was
that I then discovered from the mistake on P182 that
U.inaequalis is also well worth growing.
c. P170 shows a plant named as U.nephrophylla - to me it
looks like a small form of U.reniformis (Slack made the same
mistake in Insect eating plants AHTGT). There are allot
of plants in cultivation still incorrectly labelled in this
way.
Hope some one find this useful
