Following on from Peter Cole's report of the less than satisfactory
state of the CPs at Kew Gardens (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London,
UK), I can report that they are in similar poor health at Cambridge
University's Botanic Garden. There's hardly a new pitcher on the
Sarracenia plants. I'm not sure what the problem is - I think the
plants are in pots, but they are bedded into some moss, peat, or
something. Cambridge is much smaller than Kew, and everything is
going to depend on whether the CPs are a particular interest of the
person in charge of the glasshouses.
Most things in the gardens are in good condition and it's a good
place to visit. If there is an advantage over Kew, it's that you can
leave after a few hours without feeling that you have missed more
than you have seen.
Back to the CPs. My Cephalotus is in 'full' flower. Tiny flowers on
two scapes reaching 60cm. I hope they produce seed, which perhaps
will be easier to germinate than commercial supplies.
