HI,
I am in general agreement with your message, Philip. However, I
would disagree on one point. I would not exclude all names of commercial
CP sources engaged in collecting plants from the wild. The reason is
this; I come across the names of suppliers in various places like the
back of CP books or the listing in ICPS. I would much rather know which
places are selling field collected plants so I can make sure to avoid
giving them any of my business. So, rather than excluding the names of
these places, I'ld rather see a list of places that sell field collected
plants (to avoid them) as well as a listing of suppliers dealing only in
propogated plants. I will never deal with PP's, based on the various
postings I've seen here. To claim that field collection is actually
beneficial is the most ludicrous statement I've heard anyone make
regarding conservation. Besides just removing the plants, field
collecting disrupts the habitat because to collect you have to trudge
through the bog, compressing soil as you go (maybe not significant once
or twice but if done repeatedly, probably is) and digging holes to get the
plants out.
In summary, don't ban the names of places selling field collected
plants, let us know who they are so we can avoid them. Just my opinion.
