Ellen York asked about changes in water quality with RO, and Wayne
Forester replied that RO water is not corrosive. The contrary is true.
RO removes most of the bicarbonates and leaves the CO2 in the water. This
causes a lowering of the pH (values around 4 are possible) so this water
will eat through the metal pipework. On the other hand a RO unit
produces sufficiently low salinity to water the plants as if with rain
water *- I also had pH 4 rain, so what the difference :- ) * It also
makes you independent from rain supply, removes most of the organic
contaminants and nutrients from the water and gives you a stable supply.
I think that, as RO water contains less salts there is also less risk of
secondary effects in dissolving chemical in it - just watch that pH as
it might influence the dissociation of some pesticides or herbicides.
Anybody wanting to know more about membranes and RO, just ask, it's what
I do for a living ..... John De Witte
