If you want the plant to trap buts then you should keep them
with some water in them. Mine naturally end up with water
since I water them fairly haphazardly from above. It certainly
can't hurt the plant.

You should be suspicious. The reason this bit of
information exists is because some reports of the plants
in the wild show it being submerged by winter flooding.
I would offer however that many things which plants seem
to survive in nature will kill them in cultivation. I
think the best explanation is contained in an old joke:
