Pearlite & Vermicullite ?

Several CP books I have indicate that an acceptable soil for CP
(Sarracenias in particular) contain peat/sand/sphagnum and either
pearlite or vermiculite in varying proportions. What exactly are
pearlite and vermiculite? How do they effect the soil? Do they
change soil pH? Do they contribute minerals to the soil? I am
hesitant to use either of them without knowing exactly what they do.
Any help would be appreciated.
