Dear Fellow Internet User:

Greetings my friend! I am a senior Marketing major at the University of
North Carolina at Asheville. It is my privilege to have been selected to
participate in the 10th annual National Conference on Undergraduate
Research here in the Spring. The topic of my research is user attitudes
and ideas toward certain common online activities- especially dealing with
activities related to ethics (e.g. censorship, plagiarism) and marketing
(e.g. advertising, direct mail).

In light of the recent onslaught of "cyberspace" into our everyday lives,
and the even more recent telecommunications bill, this research is
extremely relevant and necessary. The fact that no researcher has yet to
try to ascertain how people really feel about these issues makes my work
even more important. As Internet users, we all stand to benefit from
research of this type. It will serve to educate law makers, marketers,
academians and other groups that have a direct bearing on our online
existence.

You have been randomly selected (using systematic random sampling with
Rider's Internet Yellow Pages as the sampling frame) to participate in
this study. It is extremely important to my work that you assist me. I
would be very grateful if you could spend about 5 minutes of your time
filling out the survey at the below listed URL (site) on the World Wide
Web. I understand that you are very busy but this would only take a few
moments, and it would help me immensely. I assure you that your responses
will remain completely confidential and that you will not be bothered by
me or the University in the future whether or not you choose to respond.
(On the off chance that you have been contacted by me before, please
disregard this message--there are some multiple entries in the Rider's
YP.) I am not affiliated in any way with any commercial organization.

Once again, I implore you to help me conduct this relevant and important
study. At the end of the short survey, there is a place to enter your
email address if (and only if) you wish to be emailed the results of the
study when it is concluded. I thank you very much for your time. You may
use any Web browser (e.g. Netscape, Lynx, Mosaic) to complete the survey.
Here is the World Wide Web site:

The survey will remain online until March 21, but I ask you to please
complete it as soon as possible. If you have any questions or comments,
please do not hesitate to email me personally at rodman@cs.unca.edu. Once
again, I thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Zack Rodman
Senior, UNC-Asheville
