Dionaea

I saw a commercial on TV today that may interest some people here. This
Saturday morning on WTBS (an American TV station, seen on cable in most
of the USA) the show 'National Geographic Explorer' will include a
segment on the illegal plant trade, including trade of illegally
collected cactii and Dionaea.

Speaking of Dionaea, I took the leaf mulch off my outside plants a few
days ago. The Sarracenia look great. One S. psittacina had very little
leaf dieback and looks almost like it did before it was buried for the
cold weather last fall and the S. flava are showing flower buds.
Unfortunately, most of my Dionaea forms rotted. I'm really ticked off
about this. These were mostly tiny plants, but one 'all red' was nearly
mature. These plants were placed so they had the maximum amount of leaf
cover. I guess this shows that the amount of protection is critical -
too much and they will be too warm and rot can set in, but too little
and they are subject to many cycles of freezing and thawing that can
stress or kill the plant. ---- Don Burden New Albany, Indiana, USA
