This is my first entry. I am reading your comments rather late so that any
response from me would be late. The water problem :- I live in Norfolk
which is a very dry county, with very hard water (28o Clark). I collect
rain water in 4 tanks of 45gallon each, some comes from a concrete tiled
roof. This hasn't caused any problem so far. Other ideas that haven't been
mentioned, collecting the water from defrosting the fridge and deep freeze,
I get over 2 pints from a dehumidifier after running overnight on a cheap
rate of electricity. In Slacks book he suggests using Sulphuric acid to
acidify the hard water. The acid doesn't have to be strong, after all we
all use it in the car batteries. Peat stirred into the hard water should be
a safer way to acidify the water and left to settle or the peat could be
put into a hessian sack.
On the accessibility of the plant map. I have worked in a University for
many years and the academic members have no better morals than non academic
enthusiasts. The map should be available to all who contribute to it. I am
not criticising but, there has been a general condemnation of people
collecting plants from the wild and then there is a long series of articles
of someone collecting plants from the wild and selling them. Is it because
they were not collected from America?
Has anyone any experience of saracenia's or vft's having any viruses and if
so what are the symptoms ?
