FWIW, a nationally respected botanist tells me that the principal means
plants use to detect the seasons is the length of night. Presumably
this means we can simulate winter by cutting out light for a few hours
before dusk and for a few hours after dawn, and we can simulate summer
by providing artificial light before dawn and after dusk.
