I have a couple of monsters in the back yard that control the snail
population very well. They have big yellow webbed feet and bills and
just live for wandering around in the rain looking for slimy tasties
to scarf down.

Mind you, they also scarf down just about anything else in the garden
that happens to take their fancy including all sorts of greenery
(generally the greenery they favour most happens to coincide with what
you favour most ;-) so fences around the desirable stuff is mandatory.
