Tillandsia usneoides is a member of the Bromeliaceae, which contains a large
number of tropical and subtropical epiphytes. Pineapple is also in this
family. Its specific etithet "usneoides" comes from Usnea, which is a lichen
that is similar to it in color and general appearance. We have both hanging
from the trees here but Usnea is much more common. It is easy to tell them
apart once you see them together. Take a look at

One of the worst chigger infestations that I have ever had came from handling
Tillandsia.
