Gordon, Thank you very much. I knew that someone in our very observant
group would know the answer! Now that I have a name, I can look up more
info in the library here.

so I was correct that they are crustacea. Interesting. This reminds me of
pillbugs and sowbugs which I believe also have aquatic family members.
