Dear Listeners,

Thanks to our kind Japanese correspondent Isao Takai (Konnichiwa!) who
has sent me a specimen of the book in question, I can give you a
brief review here.

The book is issued by the

INSECTIVOROUS PLANT SOCIETY,
Department of Biology, Nippon Dental University
Fujimi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 102, Japan

ISBN4-416-49600-1

The price of the book is

(Yen, I assume), plus postage

> \610-
> North America, Central America, Oceania, the Middle and Near East, Europe

The above is only ordering information (originally from Mr. Isao
Takai, Thanks again!). No advertisement intended!

******************** COMMENT: **************************************

The book (144 pp.) is in a nice format and printed in good quality.
The text is Japanese (including the title; I therefore refer to it as
simply "the book" of the IPS, ashamedly confessing my ignorance
of Japanese), exclusively, only scientific names are Latin. Several
species of cps are featured here with colour photographs for the
first time, and most (all?) pictures are originals which were not
published previously. The value of the book therefore rivals that of
"The Carnivorous Plants of the World in Colour" by M. & K. Kondo in
many respects. Most species depicted are identified correctly.

However, like in any opus of comparable extent, some errors occur:

"P. colimensis" on p. 4 is not this species but probably
_P.hemiepiphytica_ (long corolla tube: Zamudio-Ruiz' sect.
Longitubus!).

"U. reticulata" on p. 23 is probably not this species but perhaps
_U. graminifolia_ (peduncle not twining, apparently not 20-100 cm
long, leaves distinctly 3-nerved, corolla palate broad, fruiting
pedicels not sharply reflexed).

"N. stenophylla" on p. 34 is not this species but _N. fallax_
(orbicular lid).

"D. arenicola" on p. 55 is not this species but probably
_D. kaieteurensis_ (lamina orbicular and not narrow, indumentum not
visible, however)

"D.petiolaris 'Kununurra'" on p. 67 is now formally named _D.
ordensis_.

D.* tokaiensis should be treated like the other hybrids (cf. D.*
obovata).

There is no "N. kewensis" on p. 36 as noted in the index (p. 139),
while P.* kewensis (p. 5) is missing in the index.

Some orthographic errors (mostly in the index):

"P. ehlersae" should be spelt _P. ehlersiae_.
"N. clipiata" should be spelt _N. clipeata_.
"D. binata 'Dichoma'" should be spelt D. binata dichotoma (no quotes,
not capitalized. It is an -albeit invalid- Latin Name).
"D. burmanni" should be spelt _D.burmannii_.
"D. capillaris * intermrdia" should be spelt _D. capillaris *
intermedia_.
"H. ionasi" should be spelt _H. ionasii_.
"N. alisaputraina" should be spelt N.* alisaputraiana.
"N. ragah" should be spelt _N. rajah_.
"U. minutissime" should be spelt _U.minutissima_.

Nevertheless, the book is valuable as a reference work and deserves a
place in the cp enthusiast's library.

Enjoy!

Kind regards
Jan
