Some thoughts on CP Database CDROM

I thought I'd again bring up the possibility of making a CP CDROM based
on the CP database page:

http://www.hpl.hp.com/bot/cp_home

The existing database was recently reformatted into DOS-compatible (8x3)
filenames by Kevin Greally, so we are much nearer than we were before.
Thanks Kevin!

The entire database: photos, cp worldlist, and listserv archives,
currently comes to 180 Meg. We have 316 images, providing spotty photo
coverage of most major species. CDROM capacity is about 600 Meg.

There has been some talk about putting back issues of CPN on the disk.
In principle, this is OK with the current ICPS board.

My current plan is to make the disk a mountable filesystem, which can be
browsed on PC/MAC/UNIX, etc with netscape, mosaic, or other HTML
browser. No CGI or scripts would be used - only pure HTML and graphics.

It would be really nice to have the first disk come out in time to
distribute at the 1997 International CP Conference.

Towards this end, I'd like to encourage everyone to submit pictures -
especially for species not yet covered. Every picture will get credited,
and I'm happy to put links in to private WEB pages. I'm also happy to
put copies of private pages on the CDROM, as long as such pages do not
use any cgi facilities and keep essentially to HTML3.0 compatibility.

Also, any other efforts to produce cultural write-ups, monographs,
slide-shows (feel free to leverage the existing images for your talk),
would be great also. I'd like to get a photo and short bio/snail address
from each of the past contributors to link into their database contributions.

If we want to make this happen for the upcoming '97 conference, we'll
need to really hustle.

Anyone interested?
