ICPS\325s Purpose

In watching the thread of this topic, I have become more and more
convinced that the ICPS needs to work at developing itself a much
broader/active role in three areas:

1) An International \323voice\323 for the concerns of Carnivorous
Plant/Habitat conservation. If Rick\325s vision of ICPS becoming a
legal Non-Profit Organization turns into a reality, it will allow it not
only to become the \322mouthpiece\323 for all of us, but also could be a
strong \322door knocker\323 for securing additional funds for
conservation, education, and possible even research.

2) Education - Our Society needs to work on developing educational
programs that can be presented to interested groups, school &
organizations. The database, FAQs and CD-rom project are a very big
step in this direction and it is exciting to see the willingness of the
listserv participants to get involved.

3) Evangelism - by helping in the development, and encouragement, of
local \322Chapters\323 of the ICPS, more and more people will begin to
see the uniqueness of these plants, as well as the problems associated
with their continued existence. This is the real key, I believe, in
bringing the Hobbyist\323 & the \322Conservationist\323 together.
Getting to know & understand one another is an important aspect of real
communication -- and without this happening we will accomplish nothing.

I think that Nigel made some very good comments (positive criticisms?)
in his recent e-mails concerning this topic. I particularly liked his
identifying one important need ... the need for more
\322international\323 participation in the development of the ICPS. Not
just membership, although that is a very important first step, but
INVOLVEMENT - actual participation in developing goals, projects &
support. I see a \322mild complaint\322 in Nigel\325s comments that the
ICPS seems to be an \322All-American\322 organization. Is it by intent
(I doubt it) or default??

Enough from me ... comments?
