Subject: Nepenthes

Can anyone tell me why Nepenthes has upper and lower pitchers?
Do the lower pitchers develop after the upper pitchers?
Do they both extend from similar leaves?

I have an ALATA, A VENTRICOSA and A MIXTA, all in hanging baskets on the
sundeck.
