Subject: Mini-terraria report...

Still no sign of my Klima-Gro. So my three CP hobos (a d.adelae, a mutt
ping- which may or may not be longifolia- and a VFT) are still in my
former plastic terraria. This terraria was purchased at a pet store
last year; its actually meant to house boring tarantulas and/or lizards-
SHEESH!- who'd want it for that.:)

Anyway, its about 12"x6"x6". While its serving as a temporary home, I
keep it's top covered (loosely for air circulation) with saran wrap.
The other day, I found a tiny worm in the roots of a very dead dogwood I
dug up (aren't non-CPs just so dull? Don't you wish a marigold could be
crossed with a VFT just to give it some attitude? But I digress...) and
since there are no bugs in sight at this time of year, it quickly became
adelae food! Adelae gulped that beast right up.

Tonight, after taking some pictures of comet Hale-Bopp (And if anyone
in the northern hemisphere hasn't seen this comet yet- shame on you! Go
out after your local sunset and look NW for a smudgy looking blob that's
bigger then any star- as it gets darker you'll see its tail- but let's
not get off topic here- if you have any Hale Bopp questions, search the
net- there are tons of sources/sites...) I decided to check the adelae
and much to my surprise, it's caught tons of gnats, and it's sending up
a flower scape!!! All of adelae's traps are robust, its newest leaf is
3" long and case book perfect. This drosera is quite striking. Most of
my early experience was with d. rotundifolias... they almost always
flatlined on me after a few months. This adelae seems real hardy for a
sundew.

The Ping flower scape seems to have halted in it's tracks (GRRR!) from
transplant shock, but the ping had a few gnats on its leaves, too. One
thing I noticed... this ping seems to keep its leaves more vertical then
horizontal. (Or do they fold up at night? I'll have to have a daytime
look.) The leaves are about 2-3 inches long and kind of like a
stretched pare shape- extremely fleshy and rubbery to the touch. Kinda
gross to touch actually, but not an ugly plant.

Can't wait for that Klima-gro...
Cheers,
Paul

PS- to Robert Hood: that was me talking about CPs eating squirrels-
specifically VFTs... I was hoping (in a joking way...) that someone had
a hybrid VFT that eats squirrels since a pack of the cuddly rodents
devoured my thriving VFT terraria. This terraria is now being rented
out by my three homeless hobo CPs mentioned above.

PPS- Feeding a squirrel to a VFT is like the old Monty Python joke: "I
just spent four hours burying the cat..." says one man. "Four hours
burying the cat???" asks another man, incredulously. "Well- he wouldn't
sit still!" answers the first man...
