confusion about the meaning of "peat"

Subject: confusion about the meaning of "peat"

I'm from the United States, but I don't know what the confusion is about the
meaning of the word "peat." I have never heard it used to refer to anything
but the ancient, decomposed remains of sphagnum moss. What do other people
mean when they say "peat?"
