Subject: CP chat

For anyone who's interested, I have just installed a chat room on my
website. I would welcome any comments or feedback, particularly because
it's a java applet, and I can't actually use it myself (non-java browser
<sigh!>) If this works, I hope to install a script-based chat room which
will negate the need for full java support. I'd be grateful if someone
could confirm that it works because as I say, I can't actually check it
myself (the code looks OK anyway...)

I know CP chat has been tried in the past and failed, seemingly not so
much from lack of interest (as I recall, there was plenty of that,) as
much as the difficulty of coordinating regular meetings across 24 timezones
(many of us Europeans haven't the first notion how to convert to EST, PST,
etc., and I'm sure vice versa.)

In view of the relatively few CPers on the internet (well, compared to
assorted music fans, trekkies, IRCers, etc.,) there seems little chance of
enough people happening to visit the same website and choosing to chat to
make a less scheduled system work, and if people check out the chat room a
few times and there's noone else there, then they tend to lose interest and
never come back. Unless...

If any other CP webmasters out there would like to link to the chat room
I have created, we could perhaps pool our visitors to reach critical mass
and hopefully create a forum where there are people chatting more often than
not. If we can achieve this, then I would expect the whole idea to
become self-sustaining: lots of people chatting about CPs -> more people
checking out the chat room while they're browsing.

Scheduled meetings are not excluded of course - if anyone wants to arrange
a party in the chat room, feel free (but no cigarette burns in the sofa or
wine spills on the carpet please :-)

Anyone wishing to add the chat room to their website can do so with a
minimum of hassle by simply linking to:

Any other queries, suggestions or comments are welcome,

           Happy growing,

                       Peter
