The charcoal in my opinion, is just a matter of personal taste, rather
than a necessity. Like I mentioned, I prefer charcoal over perlite, but I
think peat and sand is just as good, as long as there is enough sand to
'open' the mixture. I have not had any negative effects with the charcoal,
and I agree that as long as your ceph is doing fine without it, then there
isn't a need for worry.
I have never tried fertilizer on my ceph, instead I feed it some small
ants from time to time. I tried feeding a small cricket once, but that
turned out to be disastrous, destroying the pitcher and letting loose some
very unsightly nematodes.
