Computer virus hoaxes have been around almost as long as actual viruses.
They will not go away as long as there are real viruses to mimic.
Andrew, don't feel bad. Getting tricked by one of these is as common (if
not more) than "How I Killed My First Venus Flytrap" stories.
I encourage anyone unfamiliar with virus hoaxes to check out the US
DOE's virus hoax info at:
http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html
Their page contains good descriptions of some specific virus hoaxes
(Join the Crew, Deeyenda, etc.), descriptions of virus hoaxes in
general, links to more information and a very funny spoof the Good Times
hoax. (A spoof of a hoax?!?)
Peace,
Phil
