Matt,
Growing sphagnum is not as difficult as one may think. I grow it
where I live, as a matter of fact, I grow a lot of it. Sphagnum
winters well, outside in freezing weather, There is just a couple of
things that seem to brother it, dryness and wind. If you want to
increase your supply and you live in an apartment, try this method.
Invest into another small aquarium. Ten gallon will do just fine. Add
some sand peat mix (approx. one inch or less or more, doesn't matter).
Cut up the sphagnum so that it resembles hamburger. Make sure that
your sand peat mix is not super wet but very moist. Sprinkle the
chopped up moss over the sand peat mix and mist with water. Cover
container with glass or plastic wrap and place aquarium in a well
lighted area, out of direct sunlight. Within a couple of months you
will be harvesting all the sphagnum you need.
