Subject: moss question

hello all
while taking my class on a field trip today, we happened upon a
swamp and i found what appears to be sphagnum moss growing on a
rotting log.
can this be true?
if so, then perhaps, a way to promote cp growth might be on
hamster bedding ( which is really wood shavings ) and peat moss?

any ideas or comments?
