Hi Perry,

Charcoal is great at absorbing chemicals, which is why it's also used in
air filters, some tc media, and some instruments to collect air
samples. It's also often added to orchid mixes and helps to prevent
root rot as the mix degrades. Whether this is a function of absorbing
harmful chemicals or preventing growth of pathogenic microorganisms, I'm
not sure.
