What to do with Sphagnum?
I now have quite a bit of sphagnum growing on the top of my peat/sand mix
used in planting sarracenias. IMHO:
1. It's nicer to look at than just plain soil
2. It keeps the humidity higher
3. I think (maybe I'm wrong) that it acts like a "canary in a coal
mine" as far
as growing conditions are concerned. If the
sphagnum is thriving growing
conditions are just right. If it starts to die off
you should maybe check your
soil/water/light conditions.
4. Its a lot easier to tell when squirrels have been digging in your
plants
Now I have a question.. Does anyone know if sphagnum encourages or discourages
SLUGS.
