One my cephalotus has come back from just the rhizome after the growing tips
rotted off and the plant was left to dry out. The peat had gone hard but
rhizome re-sprouted after being soaked.
I would never throw out a cephalotus if you can still find a firm piece of
root or rhizome. They also re-grow after being frost bitten back to below
the sphagnum, mine do it every year (althought the ones that stay inside
grow larger as they are not set back each year).
