Dear fellow cp enthusiasts,
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL CONCERNED WITH CULTIVATED CPS
The ICPS has taken measures in order to become the International
Registration Authority (IRA) for carnivorous plant cultivar names.
Such an IRA is required since the latest edition (1995) of the
International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP).
According to the ICNCP, "the functions of an IRA are:
(a) To register cultivar and cultivar-group epithets in the
denomination class..." (NB: in our case, the denomination classes are
Droseraceae, Drosophyllaceae, Dioncophyllaceae, Nepenthaceae,
Cephalotaceae, Roridulaceae, Sarraceniaceae, Byblidaceae,
Martyniaceae, and Lentibulariaceae, not Bromeliaceae) "...for which
they have accepted responsibility and to ensure their establishment.
(b) To publish full lists of all cultivar and cultivar-group epithets
in that denomination class.
(c) To maintain records, in as great detail as is practical, of the
origin, characteristics and history of each cultivar and cultivar-
group in that denomination class.
It is NOT the function of an IRA:
(a) To conduct trials.
(b) To judge if one cultivar or cultivar-group is more meritorious
or more useful than another.
(c) To judge distinctness of cultivars or cultivar-groups."
At the moment, we are in the process of generating the required list
of epithets and to complete our records on the cp cultivars named so
far. Preliminary outline information on the data available is in the
cp database:
Cultivar names are recognized by the fact that their eithet (last
part of the name) is included in single quotes (') and starts with a
CAPITAL letter.
It is quite alarming that of the approximately 250 cp cultivars named
so far, only some 45 names may be considered established according to
the ICNCP.
More than 200 cultivar names lack important parts for their proper
establishment. In most cases, a description is missing (cf. the
respective comments in the cp database). Thus, it is entirely
impossible to identify these cultivars, and especially the
establishment of names for new and possibly similar cultivars is
severely impeded. Therefore, the names in question absolutely need to
be established properly in the near future. Otherwise, these
improperly introduced names have to be indicated as unacceptable
according to ICNCP:43 "Listing requirements (c)".
I therefore ask all persons involved in the (past, present
and future) generation and naming of cp cultivars (breeders,
introducers, nominants, registrants) to look through the cp database
in its present form on the WWW if
1. their cultivar names are listed in the cp database,
2. there is a comment indicating that the names are violating an
article of the ICNCP, and
3. there are errors in the database that can be corrected (missing
literature reference, hybrid formula, etc.).
If you would like to establish a name (a new one or a not established
one already listed in the database), please contact me directly via
email (schlauer@chemie.uni-wuerzburg.de). There will be a short
introduction to the correct naming of plants in one of the next
issues of CPN. If you think you have questions of general interest to
the listeners to this discussion list, feel free to post them to this
list.
If you know persons off-line who are possibly interested in this
stuff, please forward this message to them. If appropriate, they
should contact persons with internet access. If that is not possible,
they should write (snail mail) me to:

Thanks for your co-operation.
