Subject: Selfing Darlingtonia

Hi Friends,
In answer to the question, can Darlingtonia be selfed? they
anbswer is YES, in the literal (of course it can, but will it work?) and
in the successful sense :-) of course it will work. Here's how.
When the flower has opened fully, tou will notice that there is a
small star shaped object that projects from the bottom of the bell
(ovary). This is the female part. Also noticed will be the ring of
pollen bearing anthers suspended around the top of the bell. Wait until
the pollen is dropping from the stamens. if it appears powdery, it is
ready. Take one of these anthers off carefully with a pair of forceps
(tweezers) and dust the female parts. Do this with several anthers. Do
it several days in a row. the female parts will be sticky. Try and stick
the male parts to the female parts if possible. It insures the pollen
transfer.
Once you have done this, wait. The ovary will swell up into a
bell shaped object, indicating seed ripening with in. The seed will look
like small iregular bits of spikey chaff. They don't look like seeds at
all. They grow like them though.
        Best wishes
        Andrew
